Nadal claims ATP Masters title No.35

Rafael Nadal successfully defended his Canadian Open title with a dominant straight-sets win over Russian Daniil Medvedev for a record-extending 35th ATP Masters triumph.

With the US Open a fortnight away, Nadal retained a hard-court championship for the first time in his career with the 6-3 6-0 demolition of the Russian Medvedev in one hour and 10 minutes.

Nadal won his 83rd singles title and third of the year after clay victories in Rome and at the French Open.

World No.2 Nadal stormed to the first set in 41 minutes after Medvedev offered a break with a double fault and the Spaniard did not drop a game in the second set to earn his fifth Canadian honour.

“The most important thing is to win, I’m not here to think about defending or not defending,” Nadal said after his record 51st Masters final.

“It’s just a fact and it’s important to be back on a hard court to win another big title again.”

Nadal received a winner’s cheque of $1,049,040 ($A1,546,080) while Medvedev earned $531,010 ($A782,600) for his week’s work.

In his first meeting with Nadal, Medvedev won an enthralling 32-shot rally to grab the first break point in the opening game but Nadal managed to hold serve.

“Lucky that I held that first game and then I played the best match of my whole week,” Nadal said.

Nadal broke Medvedev in the fourth game to go 3-1 up and dominated the remainder of the match.

Medvedev, who came into Montreal with a runner-up result to Nick Kyrgios in Washington DC, will rise one spot to world No.8 when the rankings are updated on Monday.

“Rafa is an amazing champion of our sport,” Medvedev said.

“It’s an honour for me to first play against you. You made an amazing tournament so congrats to you.”

Nadal is yet to decide if he would play in the Cincinnati Masters tournament where he is the second seed behind world No.1 Novak Djokovic.

“I don’t know. I will have to speak to my team,” he said.
