Polish No.24 seed Jerzy Janowicz lost the plot and nearly lost the match before rallying to beat Indian Somdev Devvarman at the Australian Open.

Janowicz admits he “went nuts” after a controversial line call went against him in the first-set tie break.

He had set point at 9-8 and Devvarman’s forehand appeared wide, but the linesman said it was in and the chair umpire did not overrule the call.

Janowicz was outraged and made his feelings very clear to the chair umpire.

“This was the moment when I went nuts – otherwise, the rest of the match, I was pretty calm,” Janowicz said.

“It was clean out – I was already happy, I was already shouting `c’mon’.

“But the referees didn’t say anything.”

After losing the first set 7-6, Janowicz also received a code violation when he whacked the umpire’s chair with his racket.

“I was just worried about his voice, the guy was yelling at the top of his lungs, I was like, ‘dude, just calm down a little bit,” Janowicz said.

The hole Janowicz was digging for himself became even deeper when Sevvarman won the second set 6-3, but the tall Pole somehow composed himself to win the next three 6-1 6-0 7-5 in an impressive comeback.

Janowicz later defended himself, saying he had done nothing wrong with his outbursts, but tournament officials may well take a different view.

“I got a warning only because I was shouting, I didn’t say anything bad,” he said.

Asked if he had gone “nuts” like that before in a match, the engaging Janowicz smiled and said “yeah”.

Asked if he had hit the umpire’s chair before, he smiled again and replied “maybe”.

This time last year, Janowicz did not have the finances to come to the Australian Open.

But after a successful 2012, he can fly business class to the tournament.

Officials may well dock him some of his money after Wednesday’s protestations.
