Preview:

I like my chances,” Dimitrov said as he previewed their match up. Given Nadal’s recent form, Dimitrov will be hoping for a miracle when he faces the powerful Spaniard in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Wednesday.

22-year-old Dimitrov had never advanced past the second round of the Australian Open until reaching the quarter-finals in Melbourne this week. He faces a tough task against Nadal, as the top seed and former Australian Open champion is playing in the quarter-finals at the Australian Open for the seventh time.

Dimitrov won his maiden title in 2013 at the Stockholm Open defeating the top seed David Ferrer in three sets despite being a set down 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 22-year-old finished the 2013 season as the youngest player on the ATP Tour and has surprised many with his form at the Australian Open. Dimitrov cruised through his opening two rounds without dropping a set, before overcoming 11th seed Milos Raonic in four sets in the third round. Dimitrov then defeated fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro’s conqueror, Roberto Bautista Agut in four sets to set up the clash against Nadal.

Previewing the match up with Nadal, Dimitrov said: “We all know that he has won tons of slams. He’s been a tremendous competitor. He’s Rafa. We all know him. But, again, I just want to put myself — that’s what I’m playing for, to put myself in a position to play those guys. I had tough battles with him in the past, played a couple times on clay. There were always little things missing. But I’m quite happy with the way I’m performing so far. So I like my chances.”

Dimitrov may like his chances, but on the contrary, Nadal has other ideas. The World No. 1 is yet to drop a set for the tournament, with his only real test coming on Monday with a battle against Japan’s Kei Nishikori. The top seed missed the Open due to injury last year and is back hungrier than ever to clinch back the title and win his fourteenth Grand Slam tournament.

Dimitrov and Nadal are scheduled to play on Rod Laver Arena at 2:00pm (3:00am GMT) on 22 January 2014.
