Rain delays Fed Cup tie in Switzerland

Persistent rain has delayed the start of Australia’s Fed Cup World Group playoff against Switzerland.

Play was due to start at midday local time (2000 AEST) on clay in Chiasso but the wet weather means any action is unlikely before 1400 (2200 AEST), if at all on Saturday.

Rain fell throughout the night in the southern Swiss city and more is forecast for Sunday.

Samantha Stosur is due first up on court for Australia in the crucial opening singles match against Swiss No.2 Stefanie Voegele.

Jarmila Gajdosova will face top-ranked Swiss Romina Oprandi in the second match.

Alicia Molik’s side needs to win the tie to keep a spot in the competition’s top tier next year.
