Ruthless Halep makes French Open quarters

Defending champion Simona Halep hurried into the French Open quarter-finals by sweeping aside Polish teenager Iga Swiatek in a 6-1 6-0 victory on Monday.

Third seed Halep produced a nearly flawless performance on Court Philippe Chatrier against a bold opponent who only turned 18 last Friday.

The Romanian will now face either American teenager Amanda Anisimova or Spain’s Aliona Bolsova.

Swiatek came out with all guns blazing but clearly failed to master her raw power, bowing out after 45 minutes when Halep whipped a forehand winner down the line.

“I have a good feeling, I feel good on court and I’m not stressing myself about the result,” said Halep.

Earlier, Madison Keys ensured a quarter-final showdown with Australia’s Ashleigh Barty.

In wet conditions in Paris, the 14th-seeded Keys had no problem dealing with 42nd-ranked Katerina Siniakova and advanced to last eight for the second straight year with a 6-2 6-4 victory.

Keys, the runner-up to Stephens at the 2017 U.S. Open and a semifinalist in Paris last year, said: “I’m definitely happy I was able to close it out in two sets.

“I love clay court and I love Paris, very happy to be here, so happy I get to play another match.”
