Simona Halep vs Dominika Cibulkova Preview and Tips – Australian Open 2014

IT’S quarter finals time at the Australian Open and already we have seen many upsets, especially in the women’s draw. At the centre of those upsets was Ana Ivanovic who takes centre stage against the promising up and coming Canadian Eugenie Bouchard. Dominika Cibulkova plays Simona Halep just a day after upsetting tournament third seed Maria Sharapova, but the impressive Halep is coming into this matchup in stellar form after knocking out Jelena Jankovic.

Preview:

The 20th seeded Dominika Cibulkova had no trouble breezing through to the fourth round after dropping only two games in the 2nd and 3rd round. Her biggest test however was to be the 3rd seeded Maria Sharapova, and after losing the first set 3-6, she looked to be down and out. The Slovakian didn’t get the message though, as she dominated the ailing Sharapova to win in three sets 3-6 6-4 6-1 and progressed through to meet Simona Halep.

Simona Halep has looked good throughout the tournament but has also shown slight form glimpses. The Romanian number one easily accounted for her first round match, dropping only one game but she needed three sets against Lepchenko in the second round. However, after dropping the first set against the American 4-6, she won the next two in impressive fashion 6-0 6-1. The tough test of facing Grand Slam winner Jelena Jankovic ensued and after dropping the second set to the Serbian, she quickly picked up her game and won the third and deciding set 6-0.

Cibulkova and Halep have met on three occasions with Cibulkova holding the narrow 2-1 advantage. They last met in 2013 where Cibulkova won in straight sets at Indian Wells. Both sets went down to the wire however but that was not the case when they met previously. In 2011, Cibulkova again won in straight sets 6-3 6-0 in what was a walkover so history shows an edge for the Slovakian, even though she is the $2.35 outsider in this. We don’t believe either player will dominate this matchup and it should be decided by a third and final set.
