Stosur advances to Lausanne quarter-finals

Samantha Stosur has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Ladies Open Lausanne, in a boost for the veteran ahead of next month’s US Open.

The Australian scored a morale-boosting 6-3 7-5 win over American Allie Kiick, to repeat her effort at last year’s tournament where she lost in the quarter-finals.

Stosur, who won the US Open in 2011, matched six aces with an equal amount of double faults but was able to convert five from 14 break points.

Currently world No.134, Stosur next meets 22-year-old Fiona Ferro – ranked 98th – for a place in the semi-finals.

French woman Ferro completed a stunning comeback against Mihaela Buzarnescu after losing the first set in little over 20 minutes to the tournament’s No.4 seed.

Fero looked dead and buried going 4-1 down in the second set before rallying to win 7-6 (7-2) before winning the last 7-5.

Meanwhile qualifier Patricia Maria Tig is into the quarter-finals of the BRD Bucharest Open after defeating No.1 seed and defending champion Anastasija Sevastova.

The 24-year-old, playing in the WTA main draw for the first time since 2017 after a series of injuries and taking time out to become a mother, staged a major upset on home soil with a 6-2 7-5 victory.

Tig, who converted four of her eight break points against the Latvian, will next face No.8 seed Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic.
