Stosur falls short in mixed doubles bid

Samantha Stosur has fallen short in her bold bid to join some of tennis’s legends as a US Open singles, doubles and mixed doubles champion.

Stosur and her American partner Rajeev Ram lost their mixed doubles semi-final on Wednesday night 6-3 6-1 to Jamie Murray and Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

A winner over the great Serena Williams in the 2011 singles final in New York, Stosur also claimed the women’s doubles crown in 2005 with American Lisa Raymond.

But the 35-year-old Australian missed out on her chance to complete a rare treble at Flushing Meadows.

Only Williams, Martina Navratilova, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, Billie Jean King and fellow Australian Margaret Court have won all three US Open women’s titles.
