Sydney teen leads local qualifying hopes

Sydney teenager Rinky Hijikata will lead the local attack into day three of Australian Open qualifying after his shock opening round win at Melbourne Park.

The 18-year-old wildcard pulled off an upset victory over Swiss world 102 Henri Laaksonen, who was the second seed in qualifying.

Ranked No.734, Hijikata held his nerve for a 7-6 (7-0) 7-6 (7-3) win to set up a second round meeting with Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the world 175, on Friday.

Fellow Sydneysider Max Purcell will also play his second round match, lining up against 26th seed Jozef Kovalik from Slovakia.

Another wildcard Storm Sanders will fly the flag for the Australian women, taking on Kaja Juvan from Slovenia.

Former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard is among the other names in action, drawn to meet Italian Martina Trevisan in round two.

Play was due to be completed Friday but will now stretch into at least another day, with organisers hopeful they can complete matches Saturday.

The forecast is mostly clear for Friday, with no smoke haze and little rain predicted.

Sixteen players from both the men’s and women’s entries will advance to the main draw, with round one there starting Monday.
