Preview:

Seventh seed Tomas Berdych is yet to drop a set for the tournament although it will be interesting to see how long this record can last as he takes on third seed David Ferrer in the quarter-finals.

Berdych is making his fourth consecutive quarter-finals appearance at the Australian Open, but each time he has been eliminated before reaching the semis. Previewing the match up with Ferrer, Berdych said: “I’m going to have a plan and I hope it’s going to be the right one. It’s going to be always about my game. I’m definitely not going to come up with something super different. So don’t expect that. But the details I will keep for myself.”

Ferrer leads their head to head record 7-4 and also has the advantage on hard courts with a win-loss record of 4-2 against Berdych. However it was Berdych who was successful in their most recent encounter at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals defeating the Spaniard 6-4, 6-4. The pair have also never met at a Grand Slam tournament.

“Of course, Tomas is a top-10 player. Always when I play with him, it’s very close… I have to play very good and I have to maintain my level,” Ferrer said.

Ferrer will need to be strong on his own serve as Berdych’s serve has been impeccable all tournament and he is yet to be broken. The 28-year-old of the Czech Republic has only been faced with four break points against him; two in the first round against Aleksandr Nedovyesov and only two more again in the third round against Damir Dzumhur. Whilst Berdych is bidding to reach his first semi-final in Melbourne, Ferrer is vying for his third consecutive semi-final appearance, although he has never reached the final.

The winner of the match will play the winner of Stanislas Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.

Berdych and Ferrer are scheduled to play at 2:30pm (3:30am GMT) on 21 January 2014.
