Tomic cruises to New York Open win

Bernard Tomic has won his first ATP Tour match since bowing out of the Australian Open in the first round and sparking a war of words with Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt.

Australian world No.87 Tomic made short work of Slovakian Lukas Lacko 6-4 6-2 in their opening-round encounter at the New York Open, setting up a clash with top seed John Isner.

Teen Alex Popyrin, who made a run to the last 32 at Melbourne Park, failed to make the main draw with a final-round qualifying loss to Canadian Brayden Schnur, while Jordan Thompson is scheduled to play American wildcard Noah Rubin later on Monday.
