Tomic’s father guilty of attacking Drouet

P – John Tomic has been handed a suspended eight-month jail sentence after being found guilty of assaulting his son Bernard’s former training partner.

A Madrid court on Friday convicted Tomic Sr of causing bodily harm after headbutting Frenchman Thomas Drouet on May 4 outside a hotel in the Spanish capital.

He received an eight-month sentence, the court said in a statement, but he will not have to go to prison since he has no criminal record and the sentence is for less than two years.

The court also issued a restraining order of 500 metres that he must maintain with Drouet.

The decision can be appealed.

Tomic Sr appeared in court last month over the incident, which took place while Bernard Tomic was competing in the Madrid Masters and left Drouet with a broken nose.

Spanish prosecutors had asked for a two-year jail sentence for Tomic, who argued he acted in self defence.

Tomic is still his son’s coach but had his credentials suspended by the ATP following the incident.

The ATP conducted its own investigation and announced during Wimbledon that Tomic’s coaching credentials would remain suspended until at least May next year.

Bernard has been critical of the men’s tour’s handling of the investigation, and admits he found it difficult to compete without his father by his side.

ATP rules leave it up to individual tournaments to decide whether Tomic Sr can attend events as a paying spectator and he did so at grasscourt tournaments at Queen’s and Eastbourne earlier this year.

He was not on hand for his son’s campaigns at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
