Trio join ATP Council after Djokovic exit

Gilles Simon, Marcus Daniell and Pablo Andujar have been elected as the new members on ATP Player Council, days after world No.1 Novak Djokovic pulled out of the elections.

Djokovic recently withdrew his nomination for the council, the governing body for men’s tennis, citing “conflict of interest” because of his role in the Professional Tennis Players’ Association.

The Serb set up the breakaway PTPA on the eve of the US Open in September after he resigned as the head of the player council.

Last month, Djokovic confirmed he had been nominated for the council election by his fellow professionals.

He accepted, but he was forced to withdraw after a new ATP deemed his role at the PTPA a conflict of interest.

France’s Simon returns to the council having served previous terms, while newcomers Andujar of Spain and New Zealand’s Daniell will serve their first term.

Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, Andy Murray, Felix Auger-Aliassime, John Millman, Kevin Anderson and Bruno Soares have been retained for the term through June 2022, the ATP also confirmed.

Djokovic’s decision to form the PTPA blindsided many players with Federer and Nadal voicing their opposition.

Canadian Vasek Pospisil also resigned from the council earlier this year to support Djokovic’s efforts in the formation of PTPA.
