Williams adds to title haul in Brisbane

The exact location of Serena Williams’ many tennis trophies remain a mystery to even the world No.1.

But Williams is hardly tiring of collecting them.

And it seems yet another is looming at the Australian Open after she overpowered world No.2 Victoria Azarenka 6-4 7-5 to defend her Brisbane International women’s title on Saturday night.

The 17-time grand slam champion capped a perfect Australian Open warm-up when she rattled off career title No.58 in Brisbane.

The 32-year-old relished holding her latest trophy aloft at Pat Rafter Arena – but admitted she could not account for the rest of her impressive career haul.

“Honestly, I don’t know where they all are,” five-time Australian Open winner Williams said after extending her record over Azarenka to 14-3.

“A lot are MIA (missing in action).

“I’m not the kind of girl that flaunts her trophies (and says) ‘oh, look at me, look at this’.

“When you walk into my house, you won’t find a trophy sitting out in the front.

“Actually there is one, but that’s just because I just unwrapped it and left it there.

“It’s not a big title or anything. We’re just running out of space because I live with Venus who has a ton of trophies, too.”

Not that Williams had ruled out setting up a post-career display of their family’s remarkable booty.

“I thought about it with all my outfits and the trophies. I thought it would be really cool. I have kept every single outfit I have,” said Williams who runs her own clothing line.

“(But) right now I don’t want to become satisfied with all the titles and everything. I want to be able to keep going and keep winning.”

Williams appears to have picked up where she left off from her 2013 haul which totalled 11 titles overall, two grand slams and more than $12 million in prizemoney.

She lost just four times in 82 matches last year – and Azarenka inflicted two of the defeats.

But it was a case of “new year, same result” when the dust settled at Pat Rafter Arena on Saturday night.

Williams’ sister – who holds 44 career titles including seven grand slams – almost added to their out of control collection on Saturday when she took on Serbian 2008 French Open winner Ana Ivanovic in Auckland’s ASB Classic title decider.

It marked the first time since 1999 that the Williams sisters had appeared in separate WTA tour finals in the same week.

Venus – who has fought health issues in recent years and is now the world No.47 – finally succumbed 6-2 5-7 6-4 to world No.16 Ivanovic in New Zealand.

“She did great. She’s just doing so much better,” Serena Williams said of her fit-again sibling.
