She may have won her 58th career title in Brisbane and is coming off the back of a 78-4 win-loss record in 2013 but Serena Williams is certainly beatable according to Jelena Jankovic.
“I think I am one of the few players who has a lot of wins against her and her sister,” Jankovic said at the Sydney International on Sunday.
Statistics bear that out.
It may seem relatively modest but Jankovic is 4-8 in career meetings with Serena Williams, the most number of victories and the best win-loss percentage of any woman in the top 10 against the world No.1.
After a disappointing 2012 where she dropped out of the world’s top 20, the Serb had a much-improved 2013, shooting back to No.8 after a consistent year.
It’s got her thinking she may even get close to the heady days of 2008 when she enjoyed some brief time as world No.1.
Jankovic feels she has the game to trouble Williams and after three losses to her in 2012 – two of which were in three sets – believes a win isn’t far away.
“It’s a matter of time,” said Jankovic, a semi-finalist in Brisbane.
“You know when you step on the court you don’t have to think it is Serena on the other side or whoever it is. You go out there and play your tennis and if you were able to beat her in the past you can do it again. That’s my mentality and that’s how I always play.”
Fellow top-tenner Petra Kvitova is of much the same mindset, the Czech saying many players seem to be beaten by Williams before they step on court.
“There are a lot of players who when they are going to play her they are mentally down and don’t necessarily believe they can win,” Kvitova said.
“You have to play 100 per cent your best tennis at the time.”
Alas, the world No.6 has little to show for her positive mindset, her career record against Williams is 0-5.
