Russian Mikhail Youzhny made a comfortable winning debut at the Thailand Open as he pounded six aces and saved all three break points he faced in a 6-3 6-2 first-round win over Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi on Wednesday.
The fifth seed, who lost to Novak Djokovic in a US Open quarter-final, advanced in just under 90 minutes at the Impact arena.
He next faces Denis Istomin after the Uzbek beat South Korea’s Jeong Suk-Young 6-3 6-0.
Youzhny, 31, has been following the trend of older players finding late success on the ATP as the Russian is one of 14 over-30 winners on the circuit this season. His victory improved his 2013 record to 33 wins and 20 losses.
In another opening-round match, Taiwan’s Lu Yen-Hsun neat Russian Evgeny Donskoy 6-3 6-2.
Dutchman Igor Sijsling won a countryman battle with national number one Robin Haase 6-7 6-4 7-6 to move into the quarter-finals.
“It went well but it was a very tough match,” Sijsling said of his victory against Haase. “We both played well. He got a bit defensive and tried to make the points longer, physically it was tough.
“I tried to play attacking tennis and it worked for me. I got to the net more and I think that helped in the end,” added the Bangkok debutant.
Spanish sixth seed Feliciano Lopez also moved into the last eight as he defeated Japan’s Go Soeda 7-6 6-3.
