But it’s the straight sets that count and the reduced court time, especially earlier on in the week when the extremes of Melbourne heat were such a factor. The Austrian has had to come from a set down in her match against Bojana Jovanovski in the second round.
Meusburger has made it further than before in the Australian Open, having had her breakthrough Top 50 season in 2013, and avoiding the grind of qualifying.
Her main weapon against the World No. 2 is the fact she is an excellent returner, although Azarenka is generally acknowledged as one of the best returners on the tour. But that might be Meusburger’s key to try and stay with the defending champion.
Azarenka will look to dominate with her ground strokes but her serve could lose her cheap points – it has not been the most consistent since the start of the year. It is hard not to see Azarenka progressing to round four though.
